TotalEnergies Uganda Partners with Kyambogo University on Energy Innovation

TotalEnergies Uganda has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kyambogo University. The partnership focuses on joint research, internships, and innovation in energy technology. University students will benefit from mentorship and practical training in solar and fuel technologies. This initiative is part of TotalEnergies’ “Young Talent Development Program.” Selected students will work on energy efficiency projects at TotalEnergies facilities. The collaboration includes funding for research and laboratory equipment. Workshops and seminars will be co-hosted to boost knowledge exchange. The initiative seeks to develop local capacity in energy and engineering fields. Kyambogo will act as a regional hub for academic-industry energy collaborations. TotalEnergies will also host annual energy innovation competitions at the university. Winners of the competitions will receive grants and startup mentorship. This move is seen as a step towards bridging academia and the corporate sector. Students will access data for academic research from TotalEnergies operations. The agreement will run for an initial period of five years. Lecturers will receive industry exposure to enhance practical teaching. A steering committee has been established to oversee implementation. Both parties hope the partnership will foster job creation in the energy sector. Free vehicle checks are being offered to customers during the week. Children’s safety corners have been established with educational games. All stations are displaying safety tips and emergency contact information. Technicians are inspecting fire extinguishers, alarms, and spill kits. TotalEnergies is working with Red Cross Uganda for medical support training. Staff are also taking part in daily safety quizzes with instant rewards. The company’s safety officers are leading morning briefings before shifts. Fuel attendants are undergoing refresher training in emergency response. Posters and flyers emphasize the importance of PPE at workplaces. TotalEnergies says safety is a non-negotiable value in its operations. Customers appreciate the effort to improve awareness on road safety. The campaign is also running online with safety trivia and animations. Stakeholders in transport and logistics have been invited for workshops. A Safety Excellence Award will be given to the best-performing station. The initiative reinforces the company’s HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) commitment.

The marathon will take place on November 2, attracting over 20,000 participants. Proceeds from the event will go towards improving maternal health facilities. TotalEnergies’ contribution includes hydration points, branded kits, and fuel logistics. Employees from all branches will participate under the “Energy for Life” theme. Sponsorship reflects the company’s commitment to health and community engagement. There will be special race categories for children and people with disabilities TotalEnergies is also setting up a wellness booth for free medical checkups. Runners will receive TotalEnergies-branded sustainable water bottles. The event will be carbon-offset with support from the Uganda Carbon Bureau. Tree planting will be conducted in partnership with NEMA post-marathon. Social media campaigns will promote training tips and health awareness. Registration has been made accessible through mobile money platforms. TotalEnergies encourages staff wellness through internal training runs. A portion of the funds will support rural clinics in Mpigi and Wakiso. This sponsorship forms part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility strategy. The facility will enhance storage, distribution, and delivery of high-quality automotive lubricants. It spans over 2,500 square meters with an automated tracking and inventory system. This investment is in response to the growing demand for lubricants in Uganda’s automotive industry. The center will serve as a regional hub for Rwanda, South Sudan, and DRC. Operations at the warehouse are expected to generate 100 direct and indirect jobs. Advanced temperature control systems have been installed for product preservation. Safety systems include fire suppression, CCTV monitoring, and anti-leakage design. The center will support mechanics and garage workshops with consistent supply. TotalEnergies’ QUARTZ lubricant line will be prominently stocked at the facility. Training workshops for mechanics are also planned at the center. Product testing labs have been established on site for quality assurance. The warehouse complies with NEMA and UNBS environmental regulations. Management expects faster turnaround time for large orders and tenders. Digital dashboards will track customer orders and inventory levels. A mobile app for garage partners will be rolled out in August 2025. Local transporters will benefit from fuel discounts when partnering on delivery. The opening ceremony featured stakeholders from the Ministry of Trade. The facility is part of a $3 million investment in Uganda’s downstream sector. TotalEnergies reaffirmed its commitment to excellence in lubricant innovation.

It is expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 30% annually. This is part of a broader commitment to energy transition by TotalEnergies. The solar initiative will gradually expand to other service stations across the country. Local authorities have commended the project for supporting green energy in western Uganda. The Mbarara station will serve both retail customers and commercial fleets. TotalEnergies is working closely with engineers to ensure maintenance and efficiency. Solar output is expected to exceed 120 kWh per day at peak operation. The design incorporates battery storage to ensure 24/7 energy availability. Training has been provided to staff on solar energy management. The company plans to roll out educational programs in nearby schools. This includes awareness campaigns on renewable energy and climate change. Mbarara residents have expressed optimism over cleaner and more reliable services. The station also features eco-friendly car wash facilities. Customer loyalty programs will now include points for sustainable purchases. TotalEnergies Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to Uganda’s Vision 2040. The government praised the private sector’s role in sustainable development. More similar projects are expected in Gulu, Mbale, and Masaka in 2025.
